When you call something a bandwagon, most people say, "Oh, I'm not on any bandwagon! I'm independant - I think for myself!".So, when I use the words, "Organic" and "Bandwagon" together, many people are going to get defensive and wonder, "am I on a bandwagon?"
When my teenage daughter told me she was going to start "going Organic" I asked her why.
She told me it was healthier.
So, I asked her how she knows. She replied, "well, isn't it?"
I responded that some of the chemicals and modifications are used to keep viruses and worms out of the food - and does she think it's healthier to eat those?
I believe I made my rhetorical point to her, but there are millions of misinformed young people out there who just simply don't know to be skeptical about the marketing hype.
Perhaps that's why I was so entertained when DarkPalmer linked to this video about the exact same subject. The interviewer stops people on the streets to ask them why they eat organic. And as it turns out (not surprisingly) very few of them really understood it.
Looks like the marketing worked!
The video is actually very entertaining, so watch it and pass it around to your friends: http://www.monsanto.com/biotech-gmo/asp/guests.asp?id=WhatsForLunch
